In the Fullness of God’s Love: A Reflection (Part 2/3)

Part 2: Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love

Romans 8:38-39 reassures us that “neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This passage speaks to the unbreakable bond between us and God’s love—a bond that transcends all earthly circumstances and human limitations.

Too often, people have faced rejection, discrimination, and marginalization, even within religious spaces that should offer safety, love, and care. We hear the painful words:

  • “You are not worthy.”
  • “You are cursed.”
  • “You will burn in hell.”
  • “You do not belong.”
  • “You are a disgrace.”
  • “You should be killed.”

The stigma, discrimination, and exclusion have left deep wounds, driving many away from themselves, their families, their communities, and even God. But Paul’s words in Romans 8:38-39 challenge us to recognize that no form of exclusion or condemnation can separate us from the love of God. God’s embrace is wide enough to include everyone.

Paul lists extreme conditions—life and death, angels and demons, the present and future, height and depth—yet concludes that nothing in all creation can separate us from God’s love. This assurance means that God’s love:

  • Is not conditional upon our circumstances,
  • Is not dependent on our actions or the acceptance of others.

It is a love that persists through all trials and tribulations, giving us a constant source of hope and strength.

For the LGBTQ+ community, this verse speaks to the core of many struggles. When society or even family and friends turn away, when policies and laws fail to protect you, when places of worship become sources of pain rather than support, Romans 8:38-39 reminds you that despite human failures, God’s love remains unbroken and ever-present. It is an affirmation that you are fully seen, fully known, and fully loved by God, just as you are.
